Solid performances from two very modestly budgeted films (WOMAN IN BLACK cost a total of $14 million, so that and CHRONICLE both will be turning a profit after one weekend) and a very respectable drop for THE GREY have made for a better-than-expected Super Bowl box-office weekend, when grosses are typically down (the good weather also I bet has helped).
Also surprising: the lack of performance by Oscar nominated films. I've seen a lot of people come out and say that THE ARTIST is a nice movie but not the best of 2011, and what's interesting is how the film has not connected commercially at all. Even star-driven vehicles like INCREDIBLY CLOSE haven't seen any bump -- nor movies like WAR HORSE. Only THE DESCENDANTS has done anything after expanding into wide national release (and even then, it's doing moderately well, not gangbusters by any means). Perhaps that says a lot about the field in general.
